Loop for Cable Management above the ceiling

Loop for Cable Management above the ceiling

Loop for Cable Management above the ceiling. A new, safe, and easy way to hang and dress cable; The loop is more cost effective and protects the cable better than a metal j-hook or zip ties. When hanging Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6a, or fiber optic cable with a zip tie, it has a tendency to dig into or possibly crimp the cable which can compromise the quality and functionality of the cable. The Loop, however, does not cut into the cable at all because it can’t be over tightened. The Loop closes with a patented locking system that can easily be unlocked to add more cable or remove unwanted cable but will not come unlocked if cable is being pulled through it.

Establishing a LAN

Cable Supply Products

Establishing a Local Area Network (LAN)

Establishing a Local Area Network (LAN) is based completely on the physical Ethernet cable. A LAN starts in the data room, a typical data room will have data racks holding servers, switches and patch panels.

Data racks can be wall mounted or free standing. Free standing vertical data racks are seven feet tall and are intended for a large capacity of switches and patch panels while mountable data racks are generally about 30 inches tall and mounted on to a backboard. Racks can be open, secure or convertible. Secure data racks are enclosed with a lock to protect the system from theft, tampering, or vandalism. Convertible data racks can either be open or secured depending on the accessories applied. After the data room, the cat5e Ethernet cable or cat6 Ethernet cable is run throughout the ceiling to specific locations in the building then dropped down the wall to be terminated onto a keystone jack. The cable used should be bought in bulk in boxes of 1000ft, having several boxes on the same job saves on time because if there are several drops going to a general area they can all be pulled at the same time along the same path and split up along the way turning a four cable drop into just one run. This makes it more convenient for the cabler and it also looks much cleaner when all the cables follow the same path above the ceiling.

Ethernet patch cables, whether they are cat5e or cat6, consist of four twisted pairs of wire which makes a total of eight wires within the cable. The four pairs are color coded as blue, orange, brown and green; each pair has a solid colored wire as well as a white striped wire. When terminating the cable to a patch panel, Ethernet jack, or even a 66 block there are two color patterns that are followed: 568A and 568B. Except for crossover cables, the pattern must be consistent on either end of the cable for the connection to work. Which pattern is used does not affect the cable as long as it is consistent, any pattern at all could be used but 568A and 568B are the two industry standards and no other pattern would be found in a professional installation. Cat6 Ethernet cable is becoming much more widely used than its predecessor cat5e. Cat6 cable has a tighter twist within the pairs which helps protect it from outer interference as well as improves performance up to 250 MHz, whereas cat5e has a performance capability of up to only 100MHz. The even newer cat6a (augmented), like the transition of cat5 to cat5e, has improved upon protecting the cables from interference and crosstalk but unlike the unchanging performance capabilities of cat5 vs. cat5e, cat6a is capable of performing up to 500MHz.

Cat6 Cable: How to Avoid Crosstalk

Cat6 Cable: How to Avoid Crosstalk

At CableSupply.com, we deal with 1000’s of feet of bulk Ethernet cable of all kinds, Cat6 Ethernet cable is one of them. Twisted pair cable is the standard for data communication because of its greater bandwidth and "cross-talk" minimization capabilities. Cross-talk is electrical interference from outside sources that disrupts the normal flow of data in a cable. Cat6 Ethernet cable AKA Cat6 cable can use high frequencies that enable it to reach up to 10 GB/s transfer rate. With the use of higher frequencies, careful planning through intelligent cable design and implementation is required to avoid cross talk.

If you strip back a twisted pair cable of a Cat5e and a Cat6 Ethernet cable, you will notice that each pair has a different twist rate. These twists help reduce the rate of interference between each pair of wires. When multiple cables run parallel to each other, all pairs of the same color will have identical twist rates. When the cables are energized to 10 GB/s frequencies, the pairs might interfere with each other and produce cross-talk. At this time, there is no software remedy for this situation and we must therefore rely solely on the cable design and implementation.

If you run multiple cables parallel to each other, there are a few measures you can take to minimize cross talk. When punching down to a patch panel, use shielded patch cords. Staggering cables on the patch panel by punching down only to odd or even can also help reduce interference.

Using proper cabling practices and techniques will decrease the chance of interference, but the type of cable being used is also important. Augmented Category 6 UTP, also referred to as Cat6A, enlarges the overall diameter of the cable to increase the distances between the twisted pairs. This technique decreases the amount of cross talk and also increases the overall length capability to 100m. When using Cat6A, be sure to take into consideration the increased diameter when large amounts of cable are being installed in one location.

With the today's technology-driven market, the demand for higher data transmission rates will always be present. Manufacturers will design cable to reduce cross talk and data interference but cable installers must also design their networks intelligently as well. With the correct cable and implementation, your client's business network will provide the stable and high performing environment required to grow successfully.

Cabling Healthcare facilities and the TIA-1179

Cabling Healthcare facilities and the TIA-1179

Healthcare facilities are much different than an average workspace

Healthcare facilities are much different so cabling telephone and computer networks in healthcare facilities have special requirements to ensure sufficient and sanitary access points to each work station within the facility. Telecommunication Industry Association (TIA) has created the TIA- 1179 which established standards for cabling in hospitals and other healthcare facilities which include standards for cable pathways, workstation definitions, cable enclosures, and access point density.

When cabling in an average workspace finding a cable pathway usually is dependent on finding the shortest distance with all the cables following the same path as much as possible. However, in a hospital or healthcare facility TIA-1179 recommends using at least two diverse and redundant pathways from entrance facility to the equipment room. The reason for this is to have two paths so that if one path were damaged or out of service the second path would be able to serve as a backup or alternative. Also, keeping the voice and data cables separate from cables that would service medical equipment. The pathways cannot compromise any operations of the facility and all enclosed cable pathways are considered air handling spaces and need to meet Infection Control Requirements. Shielded cable is also highly recommended due to the high amount of potential alien crosstalk and EMI that can be created by equipment regularly found in hospitals and healthcare facilities.

The TIA-1179 has established 11 work area classifications characterized into low, medium, or high density work areas. Low density work areas require 2-6 ports; medium density work areas require 6-12 ports; high density work areas require 14 ports or outlets. TIA recommends a minimum of at least Cat6 Cable to be able to handle modern medical equipment. Equipment rooms and telecommunications rooms are recommended to have enough space to grow up to at least 100%. Meaning they can double in size; this is so that expansion will be able to occur in the future without impeding upon the healthcare professionals or their patients. CableSupply.com carries all the recommended tools and equipment to cable healthcare facilities. The complete breakdown of how to cable healthcare facilities can be found on the TIA website.

Understanding and Utilizing RJ11

Cable Supply Products

Understanding and Utilizing RJ11

RJ11 stands for “registered jack” and was originally designed by phone companies in the 70’s and is used for analog voice lines. It is a single pair jack, a jack with 2 wires. It is typical to find RJ11s with 6 positions, which are the metallic pins on the underside of a phone jack. To make a RJ11 a mod plug, crimper, and cable is needed. Slide one pair, two wires, into the mod plug so that they line up with the two center pins which are the first position. Place the mod plug with the cable in it into a crimper and close it down on the mod plug. This will cause the pins that were previously slightly raised to crimp down on the wire, cutting through the wire housing and creating a connection.

When cabling a voice line it is wise to cable with only RJ45 jacks. RJ11 jacks only take Rj11 plugs, however a RJ45 jack can take a RJ11 or RJ45. This will be useful if in the future a computer line or VoIP (voice over IP) which is cable on a RJ45 plug, if you had a RJ11 jack in that place re-cabling the entire run would be necessary to accommodate VoIP. When punching down an analog voice line on an RJ45 jack only punch down the blue pair, take the remaining three pairs and wrap them back around the housing of the cable. If and when it is decided to upgrade that jack to a data line or VoIP the three cables that were saved can then be punched down to create a data line. Also, if in the future another line is required in the same location the three pairs wrapped around the housing can be useful again. Take the orange pair and punch them down on a separate jack on the blue pair location just like the first. You can continue this process with one cat5e or cat6 cable to have up to four lines off of the same cable.

What are Ethernet Wiring Color Guides?

This video Explains

This video lecture explains the pins and wiring in Ethernet cables and RJ45 plugs. We look at the 568A and 568B color codes, what they mean, and why they're important. We also discuss when and why to use a straight-through Ethernet patch cable color versus an Ethernet crossover cable wiring color code. Ethernet cable Color-coded wiring sequences exist as a cabling industry standard. It allows cabling technicians to reliably predict how Ethernet cable is terminated on both ends so they can follow other technicians' work without having to guess or spend time deciphering the function and connections of each wire pair. Ethernet cable jack wiring follows the T568A and T568B standards. There is no electrical difference between the T568A and T568B wire sequences, so neither is inherently superior. The only difference between them is how frequently they are used in a particular region or type of organization. So, your choice of color code - which one is "right" - will largely depend on the country you work in and what types of organizations you install for.

Types of Computer Cable

Cable Supply Products

Types of Computer Cable

There are many types of Computer Cable for a wide range of special purposes, and even more terms used to describe it all. What type of cable should you use, and when? Some cable projects are so basic, your thirteen-year-old neighbor can set it all up for you. This is great and we love DIY-ers of all ages. But when the installation of ethernet cable becomes more detailed and possibly requires drilling a hole or covering one up, you might want to re-think having your neighbor fussing about with a sledgehammer.

Computer Patch Cords

View Selection of Computer Cables

Our experts here at cable supply are so good at what they do, they speak ethernet. This article will break it down for you. This way, you know exactly what type of cable to purchase here at Cable Supply. Also, knowing about ethernet cable and the types there are just makes you a solid conversationalist. You, at a cocktail party, your IT Professional truck parked outside. And people swarming about as you regale them with stories about the latest ethernet installation you did out behind an avocado grove.

Oh, the stories you'll tell. Now let's get started.

PVC Cable / CMR Cable

PVC cable (or CMR cable) is the most common and least expensive type of indoor Ethernet cable. It is ideal for enclosed spaces that do not share airflow with areas of human habitation. We sell these types of Ethernet Cables here at cable supply but can always help you find the exact cut and fit for your job.

Plenum / CMP

Plenum-rated Ethernet cable (or CMP cable) is indoor cable encased in a jacket that conforms to more strict fire safety standards.

Plenum-rated cable is best for use in plenum airspaces (large ceiling areas that share airflow with inhabited rooms) to reduce the risk of harm in the event of a fire. PVC cable produces a deadly toxic smoke when it burns. Plenum-rated cable does not.

There are commercial building codes and workplace safety standards which may require the use of plenum-rated cabling. Check your local code then get back to Cable Supply to get the right Ethernet cable for you.

Gel-filled

These gel-filled cables contain a clear gel substance inside the jacket that encases all the wires. What makes this Ethernet cable unique is that the gel is water-resistant, protecting the cable from moisture and water.

Regular Ethernet cable buried in the ground will be exposed to underground moisture, even when placed inside a conduit. All it takes is a small amount of moisture to deteriorate the cable. Gel-filled cable, however, can be directly buried; the gel will keep the moisture out and the cable will last much longer.

The gel is not harmful to the environment and will not harm skin upon contact. The gel itself is perfectly fine to work with but you should be prepared to clean up after the project is complete. This is because the gel can actually be quite messy. After you open the cable to terminate, you might find a mess on your hands so does keep a shop rag nearby.

Direct burial

Direct burial cable is another term for gel-filled cable. They both refer to the same thing and have the same characteristics. Direct burial cable is gel-filled and can be directly buried in the ground without conduit.

UV-protected

UV-protected cable (sometimes called "UV cable") possesses a jacket that is resistant to the ultraviolet (UV) rays produced by the sun.

Sunlight contains UV rays in addition to visible light. Regular indoor cable (CMR, CMP, PVC, and plenum) should not be used outdoors because it will deteriorate within a few years from exposure to ultraviolet radiation.

If you plan to run cable across a roof or along a fence, you need to use UV-protected cable. It resists UV rays and holds up well in bad weather.

For added protection, consider UV cable with gel-fill – especially if you plan to run the same cable underground. Gel-filled UV cable protects against both ultraviolet light and moisture.

Shielded

Shielded

Ethernet cable is necessary when you're close to strong electrical interference. Nearby generators, electrical motors, and radio stations are sources of this interference and can disrupt signals passing through unprotected cable. (Shielded cable is NOT needed to protect against fluorescent lights.)

You must use shielded cable and shielded jacks to protect your data integrity, preferably with shielded patch panels and patch cords as well. The shielding must be grounded. Once grounded, the cable is protected from electrical interference.

The new code TIA1179 (hospital installation) requires cat6A shielded cabling or above.
